Georgia’s Isaiah Crowell is an Unfortunate, but Common Story

Fact: Isaiah Crowell is an extremely gifted athlete.
Fact: Isaiah Crowell is an extremely immature young man.
Fact: Isaiah Crowell is an example of someone who is given the world, and yet still feels entitled.
Fact: Isaiah Crowell is a microcosm of an ongoing dilemma in modern day sports.

Isaiah Crowell was arrested and charged with two felonies and a misdemeanor.  And now he's been dismissed from the University of Georgia football team.

I'm not sure how, or if the educational institutions in this country can change.  But the slippery slope on which they are headed has dire consequences waiting at the bottom for everyone involved.

Georgia to Unveil UGA IX at First Regular Season Game

In April of this year, Sonny Seiler announced that that he had selected “two or three finalists,” and that Uga IX would be announced at Georgia’s Picture Day, with his official unveiling at Georgia’s first regular-season game

Isaiah Crowell Arrested: Charged With Two Felonies

University of Georgia star running back Isaiah Crowell spent too much of last season crawling out of coach Mark Richt's dog house.  And in an off-season where it seemed that the young Columbus, Ga. native was getting what it meant to be able to play for a major Division-1 program, he just took a huge regressive step back.
This may have been the brightest spot in Isaiah Crowell's UGA career

Crowell was arrested early Friday morning on two weapons charges and an altering identification charge.  The arrest took place around 2:20 a.m. ET when Crowell was stopped at a vehicle checkpoint near the UGA campus.  He was booked at 3:37 a.m., and bond was set at $7,500

Hawks Still Evaluating Draft Prospects

The Atlanta Hawks – with new President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Danny Ferry – are busying preparing for the 2012 NBA Draft on June 28th. Part of that preparation is evaluating potential talent. The Hawks finished the 2011 season with only one player on their roster who was drafted in the last three years – point guard Jeff Teague – so making sure they get the most from the 2012 draft will be an important step in keeping the Hawks competitive in the upcoming season.

The Atlanta Braves Need to Serve Up Some Home Cooking

After a 3-3 road trip to Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park, the Atlanta Braves are about to begin their longest homestand of the year, and it’s time they started cooking up some home victories at Turner Field.

With three games against the Arizona Diamondbacks, three games against the National League East division leading Washington Nationals, and then four games against the struggling Chicago Cubs, the Braves have an opportunity to make up ground in the division...(Read More)

MLB Rumors: Are the Atlanta Braves Looking at Terry Francona?

Terry Francona was fired by the Boston Red Sox as a scapegoat for his team’s collapse last September. Fredi Gonzalez was not.

In many people’s opinions, Francona was not at all to blame and should not have been fired, and in probably just as many people’s opinions (not mine), Fredi Gonzalez carries all the blame and should have been (and still should be) fired.

But in the reality that is modern day professional sports, everything is results driven.  And everything that was supposed to be impervious about the Atlanta Braves this season has been filled with swiss cheese-like holes, and before long someone is going to have to answer for it.  (Read More)

It’s Time for Matt Ryan to Take the Next Step

For four years, Atlanta Falcons fans have watched quarterback Matt Ryan grow.  He’s taken baby steps in some ways, and huge strides in others.  But with a new coordinator, a full compliment of weapons at his disposal, and four seasons of NFL action under his belt, it’s time for Matt Ryan to breakout, take that next step, and lead Atlanta to another Super Bowl.  And make no mistake…Matt Ryan know this as well as anyone.

There are a few things that Ryan will need to do to move from being one of the better quarterbacks in the league to being one of the best, and take the Falcons from being just a competitive team, to being a feared one.  He needs to be a quarterback that defenses spend...

Playoffs?? Don’t Talk About a College Football Playoff!

If only the immortal words of Jim Mora were true in today’s college football landscape.  The gridiron fans of educational institutions all over the country are now abuzz with the talk of a proposed college football playoff system, but nobody seems to realize that just the mere mention of the word “playoff” associated with some sort of predetermined college football post-season facade does not make it any different than the previous incarnations that we’ve endured for decades.

Seriously, let’s really break down what they are offering to us, and see how much of a “playoff” it really is compared to the current system which is entirely full of fail...(Read More)

BREAKING NEWS: Verdict Reached in the Jerry Sandusky Sex Abuse Case

A verdict has been reached in the child sexual abuse trial of former Penn State University assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.  The jury of five men and seven women deliberated for two days before reaching a verdict.  Sandusky, his attorneys, and the prosecutors were all summoned to the court to hear the verdict late Friday night.

Sandusky had been charged with 48 counts of sex abuse against 10 boys.  At 9:50 pm, the judge read the verdict to Sandusky and his team... (Read More)

Rant Sports Pre-Season NFL Power Rankings: Atlanta Falcons Ranked 13th

This past week, Rant Sports unveiled their pre-season NFL power rankings, and the Atlanta Falcons have landed at number 13 on this list.  The list, which was a collaborative effort by a group of NFL columnists, will be updated as the season progresses.

Here is the individual list that I presented to the panel (you can see the combined rankings for all the columnists in the link above):

NBA Rumors: Could Seattle be Interested in the Atlanta Hawks?

Besides fans of any team given the shaft by officials while playing the Miami Heat this post-season, the supporters of the former Seattle SuperSonics are probably some of the most pained fans in the world right now.  Having watched their beloved Sonics move southeast and become the Oklahoma City Thunder, they are now watching them play in the NBA finals, a place where the proud franchise had not been since 1996.

But much like the fans of the Cleveland Browns, the folks in Seattle aren’t a group to just sit quietly and wait for a team to land on their shores.  They’ve been very vocal in their demands for the NBA to return to Seattle... (Read More)

All-Atlanta Falcons: The All-Time Team

Now it’s time for the unveiling of our all-time Falcons team.  While some of these picks were no-brainers, some difficult decisions had to be made.  But all of the players who represent this team, as well as our four all-decade teams are important and beloved part of Atlanta Falcons history.

On each list in this series, I consider more than just compiled statistics to decide who makes the cut.  I looked at what they contributed to the team, and to the community in Atlanta.  How crucial they might have been to team chemistry.  How sad (or glad) fans were to see them leave town for another team... Is Cam Newton the Next Tim Tebow…or Vice Versa?

You probably won’t find a bigger questioner when it comes to the validity of Tim Tebow as an NFL quarterback than me.  I’ve said from his first snap in the league that he wasn’t going to make it in professional football as a starting quarterback.  And yet, last night, I found myself making an argument for Tebow.  Not in directly praising him, but in my defense of Cam Newton.

Tebow and Newton are two quarterbacks that come from very similar circumstances, and have very similar issues.  Both came out of the SEC, where they won Heisman Trophies, and national championships with their respective schools....(Read More)

Atlanta Braves Fans Should Stop the Witch Hunt

When things aren’t going well for a team, everyone tries to find something or someone to blame, and right now things aren’t going too well for the Atlanta Braves.  Fans are now becoming restless, and have begun pointing fingers, trying to assign some blame. The witch hunt is on, and there is a contingent of fans who are bound and determined to get rid of manager Fredi Gonzalez. They’ve even begun hashtag campaigns on Twitter to the likes of #FireFredi and #Frediot.   I, myself am even guilty of trying to squarely lay the coat of blame on the shoulders of Braves pitching coach Roger McDowell.

But the truth is, the reason for the Braves recent troubles goes way beyond a manager or coach.  It goes way beyond...(Read More)

MLB Trade Rumors: Atlanta Braves Looking at Matt Garza?

It’s no secret that the Chicago Cubs are openly shopping starting pitcher Matt Garza, and some say he’ll be dealt before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.  So far several American League East teams have been linked to Garza trade rumors, and it was reported that the Baltimore Orioles scouted Garza last week.  Garza, who pitched for the Tampa Bay Rays from 2008-2010, would probably feel at home in the AL East.

The Top Five SEC Quarterbacks for 2012

Playing quarterback for a Southeastern Conference team can be a brutal, punishing experience given the speed and quality of the defenses in the conference.  Finding quarterbacks who can not only take the punishment, but can stand out in this conference is tough to do sometimes.  More than one SEC quarterback of a successful, even championship team, has met with hard times once getting to the NFL (See: Danny Wuerffel), but every now and then, you get a QB coming out of a lesser SEC program who finds unparalleled success in the pro ranks  (See: Eli Manning).

This year the SEC is loaded with some great quarterbacks, some of whom stand a chance of leading their teams to championships not only in the conference, but possibly even further.  Here are my top five picks for SEC quarterbacks in 2012  (Read More)

The Officiating Crisis in the NBA Needs to be Fixed

When the fans of one team in a game are complaining about officiating, it can be chalked up to paranoia.  When the fans of two teams in a game are complaining, it makes you raise an eyebrow.  But when fans, players, coaches, and analysts are all complaining, then it’s apparent there is a major problem.

Make no mistake, there is an officiating crisis going on in the NBA right now, and if something isn’t done to solve it during this off-season, the league is going to lose a lot of credibility.

NFL Rumors: Will Joe Hawley Start at Center for the Atlanta Falcons?

The Atlanta Falcons did a lot to solidify their sieve-like offensive line this off-season, and more changes could be on the way.

Although Peter Konz was drafted this year out of Wisconsin as a center, most of his work doing the rookie mini-camp and OTA sessions has been at right guard.  His height and leverage make him a natural at that position, and truthfully, it was a position that the Falcons had a more urgent need at than center...

All-Atlanta Falcons: By the Decade, Part Four

In the first three parts of our continuing series on the Atlanta Falcons all-time greats, we’ve covered the all-decade Atlanta teams from the 1960′s to the 1990′s.

All-Atlanta Falcons: By the Decade, Part One (1960′s-70′s)
All-Atlanta Falcons: By the Decade, Part Two (1980′s)
All-Atlanta Falcons: By the Decade, Part Three (1990′s)

Now we get into one of the strangest periods in Falcons’ history.  The period from 2000 to 2011 can kind of be broken up into a couple of different times.  The first half of that period being one of the worst the franchise had ever seen, and then the second half of it being the most successful.

For the Love of a Dog

For those of you who are not dog owners, I offer my sincerest sympathy.  You don't know what you're missing. But maybe after reading this, you'll head down to your local shelter or humane society, and adopt the most loyal friend you'll ever have.

The dog.  "Man's best friend".  It's not an exaggeration.  At 45 years old, I've been lucky to have been the owner of some wonderful dogs.  Currently I have an eight year old basset hound (Miles), and a one year old golden retriever (Murphy).  There are times when my house would be cleaner, quieter, and have a more pleasant aroma without them, but I wouldn't trade them for the world.

Dogs have an uncanny way of making us take a closer look at ourselves, and our values.  After all...what does a dog need?  Food, water, a soft place to lie down, and the occasional tummy rub or scratch behind the ears.  And in return they give us undying affection, love, and loyalty.  They are truly remarkable creatures.

My cousin's dog "Penny" Collins: 3/31/2000-6/8/2012
They are creatures of habit, even more so than human beings.  They will eat the same food, day after day, and be grateful every time you place a dish of kibble down in front of them.  They will lie in the same smelly bed, day after day, even though you probably only wash the cover or blanket once a month.  They will play with the same toy for years, and never ask for an updated model...even if they chew it beyond recognition.  Name me one human who would live in conditions like that and not call it "cruel".

Yet despite all that "cruelty", they gleefully wag their tails and bark every time we come home...and what do they get in return?  A brief pat on the head, and sometimes even a "be quiet!".   But they don't mind.  They're just glad to see us.  Glad to see that the rest of the "pack" has returned safely from whatever journey they were on. And whether we were gone five minutes, or five days, the greeting is just as enthusiastic.

Dogs also have a remarkable ability to sense pain or sickness...whether it's physical or emotional.  When I lie on my couch feeling blue for whatever reason, the dogs seem to sense my mood, and make the effort to be even closer to me, as if to say "we're here if you need a friend."  If you have a cut or wound, a dog's first instinct is to lick it clean for you.  And for those of you who just had your gag reflex triggered, it might interest you to know that canine saliva is very antiseptic, and actually will help clean the wound.

We can learn from a dog's lack of prejudice as well.  Dogs don't see breeds.  They see other dogs.  They see potential playmates (or just mates).  They see someone to romp and wrestle with.  They'll just as happily play with and lie next to a friend who is a homeless mutt as they would one of their own purebred pedigree.

They sleep...they eat...they play...and - from time to time - they make little doggies.  Not much else to this uncomplicated group of animals.  They have no concept of how amazingly short their life will be, because they don't think in terms of years.  They just live...enjoying each day, each sunny spot on the patio, each muddy puddle, and each stray piece of food dropped by mistake.  Truly, lives spent without regret.

No, if you don't own a dog, you don't know.  You just don't.  You might think of sweeping endless piles of hair from the floor, or mopping muddy prints on a routine basis, or how much damage "accidents" could cause to your carpet or flooring.  And every bit of that is true...and more.  But what you get in return for a little bit of inconvenience and dirt, comes back to you a hundred-fold in the joy and warmth you get knowing that you have a friend...forever.

I've often heard the phrase "a dog's life", in reference to someone who has it tough.  You know, I'm not sure that's entirely accurate.   I'll take one "dog's life" to go please.  Thanks.

Written in memory of "Penny" Collins.  Loving friend to my cousin and his family.  God bless her memory.  March 31, 2000 - June 8, 2012

All-Atlanta Falcons: By The Decade, Part Three

For the past few days we’ve been taking a look at the Atlanta Falcons all-decade teams, leading up to our final all-time Falcons team.  If you missed parts one and two, here they are:

All-Atlanta Falcons: By the Decade, Part One (1960′s-70′s)
All-Atlanta Falcons: By the Decade, Part Two (1980′s)

Now it’s time to look into one of the more interesting periods of Falcons franchise history, the 1990′s.  New coaches, new uniforms, and a new hip-hop attitude complete with celebrity sideline guests such as M.C. Hammer and Evander Holyfield...    (Read More)

Strat-O-Matic and Burping Champions? Why Not

If there is an activity that more than three people engage in, I guarantee you there is either a world championship, or a world record for that activity.  This week’s news tid-bits prove that very theory.

In the world of competitive eating, there is now a new championship…burping champions.  New York pizza chef Tim “Eater X” Janus has won the first annual World Burping Championship, out-belching four other competitors by ripping out an 18.1 second burp.  To get himself ready for the event, Janus, 35, consumed over two gallons of Diet Coke and Mountain Dew just before Friday’s competition in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen.

All-Atlanta Falcons: By the Decade, Part Two

This is the second part of our look at the Atlanta Falcons all-decade teams, leading up to our final all-time Falcons team.  Yesterday we covered the all-decade team from the 1960′s – 1970′s.  The early years for Atlanta were a bit on the sparse side for both wins, and great players, so it was fairly easy to pick some of the standouts from that era.  But in the 1980′s the Falcons began to taste some success, and the quality of the players on the teams reflected that.

This made picking some of the all-decade players from this time of the franchise history all the more difficult.  As it is anytime you do a list like this, some names had to be left off.   (Read More)

Tim Hudson’s Start Pushed Back: Julio Teheran Called Up

The scheduled starter for the Atlanta Braves in Sunday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays has had a slight change.  Tim Hudson, who threw a complete game shutout in his last start against the Miami Marlins, has been battling bone spurs in his left ankle, and will have his start pushed back.

Hudson received a cortisone shot in his ankle, and is hopeful that it will not be an ongoing issue.
The Braves have called up Julio Teheran from Triple-A Gwinnett to replace Hudson in the rotation for one start.  Teheran, who was ranked No. 5 in Baseball America’s list of Top 100

Georgia Recruits Report to Campus: Two Still Awaiting Word on Admission

With just under three months left until the 2012 college football season kickoff,  14 members of Georgia's 2012 recruiting class arrived at the University of Georgia this week.  The incoming freshman are going through orientation, and becoming familiar with the surroundings in Athens, Ga.

UGA Freshman Jordan Jenkins
Jordan Jenkins and the rest of this year's class are settling into the dormitories, and beginning the process of putting some distance between themselves and their families.  Ronald Jenkins, Jordan's father, said of leaving his son at UGA, “Well, our grocery bill will be considerably less.”

Georgia has 19 signees from last season, of which three had enrolled early including running back Keith Marshall.  However, there are still two members - defensive tackle John Atkins and defensive end Leonard Floyd - who are still dealing with meeting academic requirements, and have not reported as of yet.

Atkins is awaiting a qualifying score on the ACT and hopes to be able to report in July for the second summer session.  Atkins said that he was only "one point away" from the qualifying score, but if his scores don't meet the requirements, he will go to a junior college until he's able to qualify at Georgia.

Floyd is clearing up a grade issue and hopes to report no later than next week.  He's meeting with his high school counselor to discuss the grade problem.  “I made an A in the class.  I’m hoping to be at Georgia this week, and if not this week, then next week.”

UGA coach Mark Richt feels confident that most, if not all of this year's class will be able to meet the academic requirements.

All-Atlanta Falcons: By the Decade, Part One

The Atlanta Falcons are headed into their 47th season in the NFL.  By most accounts, it’s been a rather unsuccessful time in the league.  Admittedly the first 42 years could be looked at as “the painful growing period” of the Atlanta franchise, having limited pockets of success, but mostly mired in obscurity, poor decisions, and unwanted headlines.

However the last four years have brought new hope to a city that is known for rising from it’s own ashes and beginning anew.  For the first time in Falcons history, there is a winning tradition, and expectations of more than just pulling a “Big Ben” play out of their asses every once in a while.

Atlanta Braves Fans on the Verge of an All-Star Blunder

Atlanta Braves fans, I implore you, don’t go there.  Don’t be those fans. Don’t be the 2008 Boston Red Sox fans who stuffed the MLB All-Star Game ballot box for an undeserving Jason Varitek.  And more importantly, don’t be the 2001 Baltimore Orioles fans who made sure that Cal Ripken, Jr. was voted in just for his last All-Star hurrah. (For the record, Ripken was hitting just .240 with 4 HR and an OPS+ of 56 at the time of the All-Star Game).

I say this with all sincerity, but caution…Chipper Jones is no All-Star.  Not this year.  (Read More)

The Outrage Towards Justin Combs is Motivated By Cultural Bias

Sean (Puffy, Puff-Daddy, P-Diddy, Diddy, or whatever the name is this week) Combs son, Justin, was offered a full athletic scholarship to UCLA as a football player, and it took about 30 seconds for the plastic outrage from California taxpayers to rear it's ugly head.

Justin is receiving pressure from the citizens of California to refuse the $54,000 per year scholarship he has received from UCLA: their reasoning is that the scholarship should be given to students who need it more since his father is one of the wealthiest music moguls in the world.  Shame on you California.

Atlanta Falcons Rookie Spotlight: Peter Konz

As we approach training camp and the NFL pre-season, I’ll be taking a look at some of the Atlanta Falcons 2012 draft picks.  This week, the focus is on the first pick Atlanta took in this year’s draft, Peter Konz.

At 6-feet-5, 317 pounds, Konz is a formidable space-eater on the offensive line.  Coming out of Wisconsin, he was projected to go late in the first round by most draft analysts. ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper rated him as the top center in the 2012 draft. “He has no peers in this draft,” Kiper said.
